Hidden deep in the mountains of Sichuan and Yunnan is the Saint Maria Rehabilitation Center. On the surface, it treats patients with psychological disorders, but beneath it lies a bloody secret from 1953. After Director Elizabeth Hawk was exposed for illegal human experimentation, the center was shut down, and she sealed 72 patients inside the morgue. The dead people's resentment coalesced into the “Eternal Night”: anyone who enters is reset at midnight each day, forced to repeat the 24 hours before their death. The only way to escape is to find the patients' extracted consciousnesses, known as “Memory Cores.” But each fragment touched passes its owner's obsession on to you, making you a new prisoner of the Eternal Night.
Investigative reporter Lin Shen ventures inside to find his friend Chen Mo, who was admitted for depression treatment, then mysteriously fell to his death. His phone's last location was the basement's third floor, and his final message mentioned “the lady in the white dress.” But Lin Shen discovers that he is Elizabeth's biological nephew, and that the blood flowing through him shares the same origin as the Eternal Night. Psychiatrist Zhou Wanqing claims to be Elizabeth's descendant. A birthmark on the back of her neck seals the consciousness of her mother, Zhou Ruoxue, Elizabeth's lab assistant, who was turned into a doll after trying to destroy the Memory Core. Zhou Wanqing approached Lin Shen only to uncover the truth behind her mother's death.
As the Eternal Night loops, the morgue's corpses exact their revenge, a woman with a split mouth in the mirror demands memories, and Lao Jin, an orderly from 1953, leaks fragments of the truth. The Memory Core in Lin Shen's chest burns. He must choose between “destroying the core” and losing all his memories and emotions, or “accepting the Eternal Night” and becoming its new master. The consciousness of Zhou Wanqing's mother, the cloned puppet behind Chen Mo's disappearance, and Elizabeth's lingering-soul Host all point to the same answer: the Eternal Night is a prison of obsessions that have never been redeemed.
“Welcome to the Eternal Night, my dear nephew. Forgetting is mercy; remembering is the curse.” When the blood moon rises, can Lin Shen and Zhou Wanqing find the key to breaking the Eternal Night?
