This is a broken Western fantasy world where the gods have retreated, demons are rampant, and the Holy See is corrupt.
The contract between heaven and hell has long been loosened, and the human world has become a gray hunting ground for both: low-level evil spirits wander in abandoned churches, slums, and alleys on rainy nights, while high-level evil spirits disguise themselves as nobles, priests, and wealthy businessmen to eat away at human souls.
Exorcists are unorganized and unprotected, and rely on self-made sacred objects, forbidden spells, and demonic equipment to survive. They kill demons, and their souls are coveted by demons. They are regarded as heretics by the Vatican, and are regarded as monsters by humans - they will not survive the age of forty, which is the fate of all exorcists.
