As soon as she said it, she was taken aback herself. She had no idea where the words had come from. Maybe something had shifted when he held her hand and led her over just now. Maybe the car was too warm, so warm that she’d mistaken it for a safe place where she could say anything.
He turned to look at her.
Light from the dashboard shone up into his eyes. There was something in them she couldn’t understand, like someone who had spent a very long time underwater and had suddenly caught sight of the shore, but wasn’t sure whether it was a mirage.
He watched her for a few seconds, then lifted a hand from the steering wheel and reached over to cradle the back of her head. His fingers threaded through her hair and tightened slightly. He wasn’t holding her hard, but she could feel how carefully he was restraining himself, trying not to hurt her. He leaned toward her, and the seat belt gave a faint snap as the fabric was pulled taut.
He kissed her for a long time, until she thought she might run out of breath, until she started wondering if time had stopped. Maybe those seven years had never truly passed. Maybe time had been frozen at the moment they parted, only starting to turn again now.
