The Future Eye: The Price of a Restart

If seeing disaster comes at the cost of your life, would you still look? Lin Nian is reborn, and awakens to a new power. A twinge in her left eye lets her see fragments of the future: her best friend hit by a car, a fire breaking out in the school kitchen, a bus tumbling off a mountain road... Again and again, she arrives in time and averts disaster. She thinks she has a cheat code, that her life is finally set. Until her hair starts turning white. One vision, one white hair. One life saved, one week of her life gone. The doctor looks at her test results, his expression grave. “Miss, your organs are thirty-five years old.” She’s only twenty-four. She wants to stop, but she can’t. Those images worm their way into her mind on their own: an old man falling, a child getting lost, a delivery rider caught beneath a car’s wheels. She can see their faces as soon as she closes her eyes. Most terrifying of all, she sees an earthquake. A TV tower collapses. More than five thousand people die. The image is nailed into her mind, impossible to shake. But Old Zhou tells her: You must never speak of a major disaster. If you do, you’ll have to die in their place. Lin Nian asks, “What about those five thousand people?” Old Zhou looks at her and smiles. “Once you’re dead, they won’t have to die.” She thinks Old Zhou is joking. Until she realizes he has been waiting for this day for twenty years. [She is not a savior. She is a sacrifice.]
