Synopsis

They said I was a battery destined to be drained dry.

Serial number D-7749, Chen Yu, a D-class contract infantryman in the 7th Regiment of the 4th Infantry Division of the garrison forces on Talos III, a colony world of the Solar Federation.

What does D-class mean on the battlefields of the Stellar Era? It means your genes have no dominant psionic compatibility. It means your family has no merit points. It means Clause 4 of Section 37 in the “Standard Wartime Service Contract” you signed: In cases of extreme combat losses, D-class combat units may be designated expendable assets.

Put plainly, we're cannon fodder, sandbags, just part of a cold figure in a logistics report.

But today, as I lay on a hard bed, listening to the relentless red sandstorm batter the reinforced glass of the barracks on Talos III, watching condensation seep through a crack in the ceiling and fall drop by drop, I realized with absolute clarity for the first time:

Either burn quietly to ashes as fuel.

Or turn this godforsaken world into my own furnace.
