Lu Miao, an unemployed woman born in the 1990s, is handed money by her relatives to take over a cafe on the verge of closing. Only after opening does she discover that all her regular customers are “people”: a workaholic fox spirit who works overtime until three in the morning and has a nearly bald tail; a down-and-out scholar ghost in his tenth year of studying for the civil service exam, who orders an Americano and sits there all day; and Ox-Head and Horse-Face, driven mad by KPIs, who come to drink coffee and gripe about the underworld's KPI reforms. The cafe becomes an “emotional refuge” for the city's supernatural oddballs, until one day an official claiming to be from the “Underworld Rectification Office” shows up and accuses her shop of “operating without a license and unlawfully sheltering wandering ghosts.”
