This is a transformative work, and the plot overturns the traditional Journey to the West setting. The male lead, Jinchanzi, is unhinged. There’s physical torment but no emotional angst, no rivalry between women, and a larger role for the ensemble cast, though the main storyline is still a romance. Every character has a striking contrast between appearances and reality, so please don’t worry about the order in which they appear or the logic.
(There may be some darker mystery-solving scenes along the way. In any case, no one drags the team down, and a bunch of rebellious troublemakers are heading to Lingshan together.)
