Building No. 7, Hepingli, in the old town of Jiangcheng, is an old-style elevator-free residential building from the 1990s on the verge of abandonment. It has 6 floors, but there is a strange taboo hidden in the corridor steps: the seventh step of the stairs on each floor must not be stepped on.
Horrifying rumors circulated in the building: Thirty years ago, a female tenant committed suicide in the corridor. After that, at 12 o'clock in the middle of the night, the bell of an old-fashioned landline phone would ring out of thin air in the corridor; anyone who stepped on the seventh step would disappear mysteriously within three days, with no one alive or dead.
Because the rent is extremely low, there are only a few elderly households left behind, and the whole building is cold and eerily silent all day long.
