Building 7, Hepingli, in the old district of Jiangcheng: a six-story apartment block from the 1990s, abandoned and close to ruin, with no elevator. Yet its stairwells hide a sinister taboo: never step on the seventh stair of any flight.
A terrifying rumor has spread through the building. Thirty years ago, a female tenant hanged herself in the stairwell. Ever since, precisely at midnight, the ring of an old landline phone can be heard out of nowhere. Anyone who steps on the seventh stair is bound to vanish mysteriously within three days, leaving neither a living person nor a corpse behind.
With rent dirt cheap, only a few elderly residents remain. The entire building is cold and eerily silent day and night.
