The Debts of Childhood

Lin Wan, an ordinary mother, is consumed by the fear that her son will “fall behind in his education.” Determined to get him into a top school, she drags her whole family into her obsession, stakes half her life on a ridiculously expensive school-district home, drives her husband away, and leaves the family drowning in debt.

As her desires spiral out of control, she even pushes her younger sister, Su Mei, into a sordid exchange of power and sex, trading her sister's dignity, love, and future for a shortcut to her son's admission. When Gu Mingcheng falls from power, her son's admission is revoked, and the house becomes a financial liability, Lin Wan's world collapses. An accident leaves her sister permanently unable to have children, and she moves far away, never to see them again. Her husband divorces her without hesitation, breaking the family apart for good. The pressure drives her son into depression and school refusal, leaving him silent and withdrawn like a dying cub.

From an “anxious mother” who obsessively compared herself with others and drained her loved ones dry, to a disgraced sinner abandoned by everyone and left with nothing, Lin Wan spends ten years plunging into the bleakest depths before she finally comes to her senses. She sells the house to pay off her debts and spends the rest of her life running a tiny picture-book library, slowly helping her son heal from his broken childhood and making peace with their painful past. The best education was never about exhausting yourself to force a child to become an elite. It's about letting them grow up with dignity, happiness, and safety.

The sisters look out at each other from across the distance, each living her own life in peace. The couple quietly step away, united in caring for their child, and the boy returns to a sunny, cheerful life. There's no forced happy ending, because some wounds never fully heal. There's no miraculous comeback, only the harshness and redemption of ordinary life.

This story is the result of six years of deep thought and reflection by a father who accompanied his child through school. It's about anxiety and letting go, reconciliation and redemption, and the small steps of growth made by someone becoming a father for the first time. I hope we can all learn from it.
