In the early years of the Republic of China, the Beiping Police Department had a forgotten bureau dedicated to handling "extraordinary cases": the Nine Hells Archives Division. Its chief, Shen Yuan, appeared to be a criminal investigation expert returned from overseas, but was actually an heir to a Xiangxi family of corpse drivers, versed in the taboos of yin and yang.
Over ten years, he took on ten unsolved cases tangled up with folk legends:
A skinning murder on the night of the Winter Solstice, a glass lamp in a pregnant woman's belly, a strange nursery rhyme on the funeral procession's route, strangulation marks in a dressing mirror, twins who switched places in a murder, a consumptive ghost with an umbrella on a rainy night, living paper dolls in a paper effigy shop, an everlasting lamp extinguished in a mourning hall, a beggar knocking on a bowl in the dead of night, and an ancient mirror hiding another "self"...
Every case is a life-or-death struggle.
Every tale conceals a truth.
And behind every case, they all point to the same name:
The woman Shen Yuan sent to death row with his own hands twenty years ago.
During the Republic of China, some strange and strange things happened. We will wait and see how the detective 🕵♂️ solved the case.
