The thing A Du regretted most in her life was accepting that godforsaken assignment from the Jade Emperor.
Go down to the mortal world and accompany that dead monkey on his pilgrimage for scriptures.
The first time they met, she was ordered to go to Five Elements Mountain a month early to “get acquainted with her future companion.”
She stood at the foot of Five Elements Mountain.
The monkey looked her up and down, then sneered. “Has the Jade Emperor run out of people? He sends some little girl?”
A Du turned around and walked away. “I'm going back to Heaven to confess my failure. Anyone who wants this job can have it.”
In the end, she still couldn't leave.
And so another squabbling pair joined the journey to the West.
He scouted ahead; she undermined him. He went begging for food; she made snide comments. He fought monsters; she sat nearby munching sunflower seeds and shouting, “Go for it! If you can't win, remember to run!”
Until one day, two Sun Wukongs appeared before them. They looked exactly alike, and no one could tell them apart. Everyone was stunned.
Only A Du walked over and stood before the “Sun Wukong,” lowering her voice to say:
“That's a pretty good act. I almost didn't recognize you.”
When the eighty-one trials were over, Jin Chanzi completed his cultivation, and Sun Wukong was named the Victorious Fighting Buddha.
Heaven sent an immortal official to proclaim the Jade Emperor's decree: A Du had completed her merit and was to return to Heaven and rejoin the ranks of the immortals immediately.
But the moment she turned around, someone grabbed her wrist.
That defiant voice sounded behind her:
“A Du, back then, when I got out from under Five Elements Mountain, the Buddha gave me my freedom.”
“But this time...”
“Could you give me my freedom, too?”
