I discovered that I’m living inside a book.
It’s called "The Phoenix Hairpin", and the male lead is Lu You while the female lead is Tang Wan.
I’m the second male lead who “sent her wine and food.” I get only two lines in the whole book, and my ending is summed up in twelve words:
“After Tang Wan died, Zhao Shicheng never remarried and died at his post.”
I decided I wouldn’t be a plot device anymore.
I proposed six months early, and married her despite pressure from my clan.
Every day, I brewed medicine for her and watched as she slowly forgot that poem.
I thought I’d won.
Until the day we met at Shen Garden. She stood in front of that wall, tears streaming down her face.
Only then did I understand:
Some people’s place in her heart can’t be changed by being early or late.
But I still didn’t let go.
On the day she left, I held her hand and said:
“In our next life, let me be the first to meet you.”
After that, I lived for many years and never married.
Someone asked if it was worth it.
I said:
“I know I’m the second male lead. But loving her isn’t in the script.”
