The Golden Bamboo Mystery

In the thirteenth year of Jinghe under the Great Jing, an anonymous secret memorial was delivered directly to the imperial desk, and a shocking case erupted before the Golden Throne. The court and the countryside were shaken; the ministers panicked, factions fought for power, and tensions flared. Before the case could be investigated, word of it had already leaked. The wanted suspect fled for his life, and imperial troops were ordered to hunt him down.

Driven to the end of his escape, the fugitive entered the dense Golden Bamboo Forest and chanced upon an old monk who showed him a secret path, allowing him to slip free of the encircling net for a time. Officials at court seized the opportunity to open a case, but injustice in the courts, indiscriminate arrests, and the persecution of entire families made the infighting at court ever more fierce, bringing the foundations of the state to the brink of collapse.

The emperor came to his senses and ordered a reinvestigation of the shocking old case. A lone, incorruptible official took up his credentials and investigated thoroughly, peeling back layer after layer until he finally unraveled the case within a case and the scheme within a scheme. The wronged were vindicated, and every treacherous villain was brought to justice. The meritorious were rewarded and appointed to office, then dispatched by imperial decree to defend the frontiers and secure the realm.

Written with the weight and style of an official history, this book lays bare the machinations of the court, the mysteries of criminal justice, and the perilous complexity of human nature. One case reveals the rise and fall of the realm, and every chapter captures the winds of an era.
