New Journey to the West continues the story after the pilgrimage, focusing on new adventures for the four disciples, now Buddhas, and Shi Er, a stone monkey newly emerged from the East Sea.
In Chang'an City, Sun Wukong senses strange movements in the East Sea and sets out with Tang Sanzang, Bajie, and Sha Wujing. There they meet Shi Er, who shares the same origin as Wukong. But an old Taoist from Zhongnan Mountain, actually a wolf demon in disguise, lays a trap, sending demons from Black Wind Mountain to cause trouble and drawing them into the clutches of the "Rebirth Sect," which feeds on resentment.
From their clash at the East Sea Dragon Palace to the maze of black miasma at Black Wind Mountain, the group discovers that Shi Er and Wukong share the same "spiritual source" and are both targets of the Rebirth Sect's leader, the Faceless Buddha. They set an ambush to break the trap, follow the clues to the Kingdom of Women in Xiliang, and finally face the Faceless Buddha at the White Bone Temple on Soulbreak Cliff, defeating the evil through wit and courage.
The story retains the original's roguish charm and earthy warmth, with its characters just as vivid as ever: Wukong is sharp and protective of his companions, Bajie is a glutton who keeps everyone laughing, Sha Wujing is steady and dependable, and the mischievous Shi Er grows along the way. The plot is full of twists yet lighthearted, continuing the bonds between master and disciples and their legendary demon-slaying adventures, while adding a new chapter to a classic.
