Set in Bahe Village in Beijing, this novel tells the story of the life changes of Zhao Dehou's family in the thirty years from 1949 to 1978. The novel uses the core image of "where the pot is, there is home", and through the ups and downs of Zhao Dehou's family, it reflects the historical process of China's rural areas from land reform, cooperatization, the Great Leap Forward, people's communes, difficult times, the Cultural Revolution to the eve of reform and opening up.
