When Lin Zhao was eight, his parents died in a lunar exploration accident. With their dying breath, they left him one message: “It has awakened.”
Twenty years later, he is chief scientist on Project Torchgate. That circular structure, three billion years old, floats on the far side of the moon. Its inner walls are covered in ancient inscriptions, every marking identical to the ones in his dreams.
Torchgate is an exam set by the universe. Humanity gains the power to rewrite the laws of physics when it opens: controlled nuclear fusion, optical camouflage, weapons that manipulate causality... Technology advances explosively, and humanity thinks it has become a favorite of the gods.
Until the Ashen arrive.
They are the previous class of examinees, now Torchgate's proctors. Thirty thousand years ago, they too were overjoyed, just like humanity. Then internal divisions led them to ruin. The survivors were remade into semi-energy beings, trapped forever around stars and forced to slaughter every newcomer.
Lin Zhao meets Su Wan, a special forces commander with a scar by her eye who never gives up. He fights the universe with equations; she protects her comrades with her own flesh and blood. As they stand by one another and entrust each other with their lives, they grow closer.
But war waits for no one.
When the Ashen main force reaches the solar system, Lin Zhao uncovers a deeper truth: Torchgate isn't the finish line, only the beginning. Humanity has just passed its first test
The next one has no proctor.
