The Fragrance of Medicine Fills Chang’an in the Tang Dynasty

Lin Wei, a modern doctor, transmigrates into the body of Su Qiniang, an orphan in the early Tang dynasty. Struggling to survive in a ruined temple in Chang’an, she sets up a street stall and practices medicine, drawing on both modern medicine and traditional Chinese medicine. She saves a little beggar named A Zhu and risks her life to treat the gravely wounded subordinate of Xiao Jingyuan, the Marquis of Yongning, forging an unbreakable bond with him. Refusing to rely on the powerful, she opens Qiniang’s Pharmacy and uses her compassionate heart and medical skills to solve problems in childbirth and disease prevention. Yet she is repeatedly persecuted by her rivals and framed by the imperial court. When a devastating epidemic strikes Chang’an, she defies opposition and establishes quarantine zones. When the Turks invade the borders, she volunteers to join the army as a physician, using her skills to help the Tang forces defeat the enemy. She and Xiao Jingyuan go from testing each other to risking their lives for one another, facing succession disputes and palace conspiracies together, until the emperor finally grants them permission to marry. Lin Wei breaks through the constraints of her age, establishing a women’s medical clinic, compiling medical texts, promoting inoculation, and founding public medical offices for the poor. She becomes the Tang dynasty’s first female Director of Imperial Physicians, filling Chang’an with the fragrance of medicinal herbs and writing a legend through the compassion of a healer in an age of prosperity.
