The Immortal Who Corrects History Amid Tumultuous Times

The history books record: In the seventeenth year of the Jianzhao era, the Northern Rong broke through Yanmen. Marquis Dingyuan Lu Huang died in battle. His son, Lu Fuli, opened the city gates and surrendered to the enemy, letting the Northern Rong through the pass. They massacred the city for three days, leaving 37,000 dead. The entire Lu family was executed, and three generations were wiped out. What the history books don't say is this: The day Lu Fuli awoke, Yanmen was already an isolated city. Inside were 5,000 battered soldiers and civilians; outside stood 8,000 ravenous troops. His father's head hung from a flagpole in the enemy camp, smiling at him. He had three days' worth of grain, two days' worth of arrows, and not a single person he could trust. The cold, lifeless words in the history books became real people standing before him. Some wanted to kill him, some wanted to sell him, and some wanted to trade him for a chance to survive. All the wisdom he'd prided himself on gaining over a thousand years was worthless against the true nature of people's hearts. But he didn't want to die. And he wanted even less for those 37,000 people to die. So he opened the city gates, not to surrender, but to kill. So he ate his enemies' food and wielded their swords to keep his people alive. So he took a filthy path, one so foul even the history books dared not record it. Twenty years. He asked the man who killed his father for twenty years. For those twenty years, not a single Northern Rong would set foot beyond the pass. In return, he would help the man claim the title of khan. In the history books, this is called “colluding with the enemy and betraying one's country.” Outside the history books, the 2,300 who survived called him Heir.
