Period setting, military marriage, sweet romance, alternate history, a disastrous start from the start, love after marriage, rags-to-riches comeback
The day after the Jiang family falls, Jiang Ruanruan, its new head, sets off for the Northwest with five yuan in her pocket and her young nephew in her arms. She gives her clingy childhood sweetheart the boot and goes looking for a husband.
After overcoming one obstacle after another, she runs into her second older sister, crosses paths with human traffickers, and finally makes it to the Northwest to register her marriage.
She thinks their happy life is about to begin.
But on the very first day of their marriage, her world comes crashing down:
Her husband, a division commander, has empty pockets and nothing but IOUs to his name.
Two dishes and a soup cost six yuan and three mao.
The two senior officers turn out their pockets, but can’t scrape together even three mao.
Her second sister slams the scalpel she used on the battlefield onto the counter.
Jiang Ruanruan reluctantly hands over her last two yuan and eight mao. “So I traveled all this way just to marry into debt?!”
Where’s the division commander’s salary they promised? What about his combat bonuses?
Jiang Ruanruan flies into a rage. “You two good-for-nothings, I’ll show you what a capitalist heiress can do!”
And so, letters asking for “help” go out across the country...
Later, the people in the military housing compound notice that the poorest military wives are getting richer by the day.
Then one day, an important visitor from the capital shows up at their door:
“Ninth Sister, Second Sister, the old man’s been exonerated! Bring your two penniless husbands back to the capital to divide up the family fortune!”
Shen Wanshan comes out holding the baby, looking bewildered.
“Wife, we have a family fortune?”
