The protagonist finds himself trapped in a trial field built by "them". Each trial scene uses "unstable lighting" as the trigger condition, and "their" purpose is to screen out humans who are "worthy of being replaced." Each successful attempt to survive the flickering lights brings the protagonist closer to the truth about the world—and the mystery of his own identity.
