(First, a note: the protagonist is modeled on Chen Duo from The Outcast. Like her, he was forced to become a Gu Vessel Saint Child, so he has no emotions in the early part of the story!)
He was born in the deepest laboratory of human experimentation, with the codename “Gu.”
From the moment Lu Zhaoming could understand the world, he was a perfect “weapon”: devoid of emotion and desire, yet born with the Heart-Eroding Gu, a curse that could unravel a person’s mind through nothing more than fluctuations in emotion.
Then an accident set him free from his cage, and he stepped into a world both complex and unfamiliar. Here, kindness tangled with scheming, while rules collided with power. Clumsily, he began learning everything about being “human”: the warmth of a bowl of hot soup, the weight of a promise, the price paid for every choice.
The world sees him as an abyssal calamity that must be eradicated.
The world of the Unusual Ones sees him as a key to overturning the order, and they fight to control him.
But there is only one thing he wants to understand:
Can a being created to destroy humanity be worthy of humanity?
What meaning can a faint, firefly-like sense of self have in an abyss destined to devour every glimmer of light?
As the truth about the world slowly comes to light and the cries of his kind echo in his ears, Lu Zhaoming stands at a crossroads:
Will he obey his instincts and become the abyss itself?
Or will he become a candle, setting alight a firefly glow that is destined to be brief, yet real?
“They say I’m Gu, a calamity. Then I’ll become the one light in this disaster that can show the way forward.”
