[Period setting, rugged hero, countryside, devoted couple, soldier, sweet romance]
Her husband died in service, and his compensation was stolen. To force her to provide the Li family with an heir, her in-laws even let her father-in-law sneak into her bed in the middle of the night.
Su Qinghe stabbed the beast and fled into the rainy night. In her panic, she stumbled into the home of Lu Ye, the village’s most feared “Living Yama.”
His background was a mystery, and he was ruthless and decisive. Even the village dogs went out of their way to avoid him.
To stay alive, she gritted her teeth and crawled into his bed, asking only for one night of protection.
Who could have guessed that afterward, this fearsome man would show up at her door with a household register? “Su Qinghe, I’ve got my eye on you.”
The whole village laughed at her, calling her a “husband-killing jinx,” and cursed him as a “brute who picked up someone else’s leftovers.”
Lu Ye pulled her behind him and swept his gaze across the crowd.
“I’ve risked my life to spoil my wife. If anyone dares smear her again, I’ll make sure their whole family drinks their fill of it!”
Everyone waited to laugh when this country widow was eventually abandoned.
But when powerful officials from the provincial capital knelt in front of the Lu family home, weeping and begging for mercy, the villagers finally realized: he wasn’t some country bumpkin at all. He was a ruthless man with enormous power, hiding away in the countryside!
Later, someone asked Su Qinghe whether she was afraid of him.
She smiled softly. “No. His tenderness comes out only at night, and it’s just for me.”
Let's talk a little bit about the setting of this novel:
The "weakness" of the heroine Su Qinghe in the early stage is not a character flaw, but the imprint of her native family. She had a very controlling father and was domesticated as a political bargaining chip since she was a child. She was forced to go to the countryside and her marriage was arranged. She didn't even dare to resist - because she was never allowed to "be herself". This "caged bird" setting allows her every growth to be traced: it is not that she becomes stronger when she encounters love, but in the sense of security of being loved unconditionally by Lu Ye, the self that has been suppressed for twenty years finally dares to peek out.
The male protagonist Lu Ye is just the opposite. Without his parents, he has been working in the black market since he was a child. He has seen blood in the army. After being discharged and returning to the village, he lives like a lone wolf in the wild. He doesn't understand any big principles, he only knows that "no one can bully my people." His roughness, his ruthlessness, and his clumsiness in wanting his wife to hold her in his hands are all because he wants a "family" so much.
Very nice! Lin writes about the human nature of the world vividly! The storyline is compact! Exciting!
This book is very well written, but it's too short.
