Tales from the Northeast

In the snowy villages of Northeast China in the 1970s and 1980s, life moved as slowly as the old well at the village entrance, but there was no end of amusing tales.

A girl in a floral padded jacket meets a young man in a Zhongshan suit. Their romance is full of awkward, joyful moments, and their everyday lives are bustling and warm. The older folks chat around the kang, while half-grown kids race around the courtyard. When New Year comes, a whole pig is slaughtered, and the entire village is invited to a feast. One pot of pork and pickled cabbage is fragrant enough to fill the whole street.

Spring brings the joy of gathering wild greens. In summer, people catch fish in the river and pick wood ear mushrooms, wild mushrooms, and cucumber-scented herbs. In autumn, they catch frogs and harvest potatoes. Winter means hauling firewood and playing in the snow. Life in the Northeast is filled with the warmth of cooking fires, tenderness tucked into rough words, and a love of home etched into one's bones.

This is no earth-shattering tale, just a memory from a snowy village in Northeast China, taking you back to a warm and lively era.
