The Faraway Qilin tells the story of a deep friendship spanning fifteen years between Wang Jianguo, the owner of a private manufacturing company, and Qilin, a Tibetan driver. Their bond gives rise to a heartfelt dialogue connecting the city and the plateau, modern industrial civilization and the simple culture of Tibet. The story reflects on the excessive pursuit of “success,” “efficiency,” and “control” in modern urban life, and explores how to recover a sense of “substance” and “warmth” in an industrialized, fast-paced society, as well as the meaning of “parting” and “eternity.”
