In 2050, near-future China faces a civilizational crisis. The Five-Element Sequence Lords occupy Memory City’s twelve prisons and the memory zones of nine ancient capitals. Through four evil laws, they pawn private memories, rewrite public history, numb trauma, and burn the truth. They stuff ordinary people’s memories into glass jars to sell, reduce books of civilization to scorched earth, and erase the roots of the nation from everyone’s minds, turning hundreds of millions into soulless husks who recognize neither their loved ones nor their history.

Chen Xu, chief technician at the National Ancient Text Restoration Center, discovers irrefutable proof that Memory City is colluding with the foreign Void Spirit Society while his younger sister Chen Nian, a Peking University doctoral student in oracle bone script and bearer of a mark of civilization, deciphers the oracle bones of the Yin Ruins. He is abducted into Memory City, his memories on the verge of vanishing, and a 72-hour countdown to life or death begins.
