"Returning Home in the Evening Snow" is set in Huazhou, Shaanxi in the late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty. It tells the story of the embroiderer Zhao Zhao and the young man Chen Mu who were crushed by the troubled times. After the wedding, Zhaozhao stayed alone in an empty house in Xiu Lane, earning a living through embroidery. After giving birth to a son and losing his father, Zhaozhao waited for her husband to return amid poverty, illness and war. Chen Mu was trapped in the battlefield of Liaodong, wounded and homeless, and went through hardships on his way home. After more than twenty years of hard work, his accent had changed and his appearance was completely ruined. Finally, in Tongzhou, two hundred miles away from his home, he was wrongfully killed by the government for a headless murder. There was no news about Zhaozhao until his death, and he died of illness in a broken house. The two of them are so close to each other, separated by life and death forever, but the remaining begonia in the west of the alley blooms like blood every year, witnessing the silent annihilation of the little man in the torrent of the times.
