Investigative journalist Shen Qingci is systematically targeted after exposing a shady cover-up. She calmly gathers evidence and fights back against the harassment, then deliberately vanishes from Yunjing and retreats to the university town of Haishi to catch her breath.
On a stormy night, she runs into her first love, Zhou Yanli. Once a gifted architect, he is now distant and aloof. Though they live in the same building, he treats her like a stranger, leaving nothing but the address of a counseling clinic on her suitcase.
She works to rebuild her life, volunteering in the community. He represents the project partner, and they clash without giving an inch on professional matters. Then, when a new investigation leads to her being smeared, he is the first to stand up for her. Only then does she discover that this seemingly cold man has kept locked in his drawer the plans for a women’s safe space he designed three years ago.
The threats from Yunjing follow her to Haishi. He silently watches over her through the night, sparking a fierce confrontation. Old wounds reopen: back then, he left without a word because, amid upheaval in his family, he felt unworthy and wanted to protect her. But she clung to the story that he had abandoned her, never understanding the silent vigil he kept.
When her investigation and clues from an old case involving his family unexpectedly point to the same web of corrupt interests, two battered idealists make a pact on a dark beach:
“My fight isn’t one I can win alone. What about yours?”
“My designs are missing a consultant who understands people better than anyone. Interested?”
This isn’t about saving each other. It’s about two broken souls learning how to truly stand side by side in their respective fields. When an invitation from a top studio and a nomination for an international award arrive at the same time, they each choose to pursue the summit in their own way.
Love isn’t about one person stopping for the other. It’s about reaching the top on your own and still being able to see each other’s light, knowing you aren’t alone on the journey.
