Where the Hu Jia Sounds, There Lies the Road Home

Where the Hujia Sounds, There Lies the Way Home

Lin Sheng, a cardiac surgeon specializing in critical cases, collapsed on the front lines of the pandemic after contracting viral myocarditis. Amid the fading strains of Eighteen Songs of a Nomad Flute in her ears, her soul traveled back to the Eastern Han dynasty, where she became Cai Wenji, trapped among the Xiongnu.

Across the war-torn northern frontier, she wielded modern medicine like a blade, breaking the constraints of steppe shamanism. She treated plague victims, performed sutures and introduced smallpox inoculation. Rising from a lowly medical slave to a revered physician among the Xiongnu, she shared half a lifetime of entangled bonds with the Left Sage King, Liu Bao, and bore his children. When Cao Cao ransomed her with gold and jade, she began the journey home, enduring the agony of being separated from her children, and resumed her medical mission in the war-ravaged Central Plains.

Facing the prejudices of the scholar-officials, the devastation of the Jian’an plague and the whirlpool of court politics, she founded a school for women physicians, compiled Essentials of Epidemic Diseases and established a battlefield first-aid system. Her arranged marriage to Dong Si grew into a steadfast partnership. And when plague ravaged the Xiongnu, she resolutely returned to the northern frontier, using her medical skills to unite the Han and the Hu.

From the flames of war in the northern frontier to the mountains and rivers of the Central Plains, her compassionate heart as a physician carried her across the barriers of time, ethnicity and gender. She brought the wisdom of modern medicine to the troubled final years of the Han dynasty, ultimately becoming a medical pioneer remembered throughout history. Across fifty years of a fleeting life, wherever the sound of the hujia flute arose, she found the path physicians take to reach their patients, and the fulfillment of a soul finding its home. Blending historical legend with rigorous medical storytelling, this novel portrays compassion and devotion that never fade, even in times of chaos.
