Three years later, Xue Li, chief of the Black Mountain bandits, led his men in an attack. Li Mubai exhausted his life force and paid with his life to repel the enemy, buying his three disciples a chance to escape. In his final moments, he left behind three keepsakes and these words:

From then on, the three boys carried on their master’s legacy and set out on a long journey. They would be caught up in the rivalries of the great clans in Qinghe City, face life and death deep beneath the earth, grow in their own ways at Jixia Academy, and temper their hearts amid blood and fire.
They made a pact to meet again in three years.
