The Silent Journey Home

On the morning of her 28th birthday, Chu Nian’s world fell silent when a news alert about a car accident appeared on her phone.

Her parents died suddenly. At the funeral, she remained so composed that people couldn’t help but stare. But late that night, standing before the last box of her mother’s dumplings in the fridge, she heard something inside her collapse with a deafening crash.

Running away became instinct.

She headed for the borderlands of Yunnan, only to stumble into the sound of real gunfire. A five-year-old girl named Xiao Yu sat on a stone beside a pool of blood, her eyes vacant, like a cicada shell hollowed out from within.

The moment she signed the adoption papers, Chu Nian suddenly understood: love wasn’t about being made whole, but about taking responsibility.

She took the girl, now renamed Yiyi, toward Tibet. At an altitude of 4,500 meters, as she vomited, she cried real tears for the first time.

When the pandemic brought a citywide lockdown, she put on protective gear and became a volunteer, where she met Lu Chengyang, a doctor who, like her, carried his own trauma.

This is a story about how trauma can be transformed into the strength to live.

It doesn’t promise healing. It tells how we learn to live with silence,

and find within it the lights that point the way home. Kindled by responsibility and tenderly protected,

they eventually illuminate the vast inner world we rebuild with our own hands, a place as expansive as home.
