Antique restorer Lin Xia has a remarkable gift: when she touches an old object, she can awaken fragments of memories sleeping within it. Her studio, Timecatcher, is tucked deep in the alleys of the old city. It takes in objects forgotten by time and safeguards stories left untold.
One rainy day, a mysterious visitor, Gu Yanchen, arrives with an old gramophone that has been broken for half a century. He asks only that Lin Xia restore the “most precious sound” his grandmother, Shen Qingyan, had kept longing to hear before her death. The gramophone holds more than the sweet promise Shen Qingyan and her lover, Gu Jingyuan, made amid the flames of war in the Republic of China era, to “travel together through Jiangnan when the war is over.” It also preserves a tragic love story sealed away by the years.
While restoring it, Lin Xia discovers that the name “Qingyan” on the brass pocket watch she treasures is the same as the gramophone owner's. As she pieces together the fragments of memory, she gradually uncovers a bond spanning generations: the watch was a token of love between Gu Jingyuan and Shen Qingyan, and her mother, Su Wan, was Shen Qingyan's dear friend, who once stood by her through life and death. Lin Xia's father, it turns out, was Gu Jingyuan's comrade who fell on the battlefield. Her mother lived under an assumed name to protect her, leaving behind a clue before her death that points straight to the past buried by time.
The gramophone's “Jasmine Flower” melody begins to play. The glint of a medal for military service catches the sweet scent of osmanthus cakes, and the brass watch's ticking carries across fifty years. Lin Xia must do more than restore old objects: she must piece together the puzzle of her own origins and carry the promise made by two generations to Jiangnan's misty rains. There, the love, friendship, and regrets torn apart by war may finally find a tender, fulfilling ending in the echoes of time.
