The Fragrance of Sophora Blossoms by the Wo River

The Scent of Sophora Blossoms by the Wo River begins in 2000 in Luyi County, Zhoukou, Henan, and tells the story of the boy Gousheng’s turbulent life. At six, he ran along the dirt road by the Wo River, pushing an iron hoop. The scent of sophora blossoms mingled with the smell of wheat straw, forming the most vivid backdrop to his childhood. But that innocence was soon shattered by his teenage rebellion. In eighth grade, failing report cards, arguing with teachers, and all-night stays at internet cafes led him to smash his schoolbag and shout, “I’m done with school!” He plunged headfirst into the non-mainstream scene: dyed blond hair, bell-bottoms, and Lingzi, the girl with a lip piercing, became the hallmarks of his wayward youth.
