Folklore scholar Chen Mo travels to the isolated town of Piying to investigate a bizarre disappearance. The townspeople are warm and welcoming, but they follow a set of eerie “shadow-puppet rules”: you must go home after dark, never look directly at your shadow, and put on a “shadow-puppet show” on the fifteenth of every month. Chen Mo discovers that every person who has disappeared from the town broke one of the rules. When he tries to uncover the truth, his own shadow starts moving on its own. Beneath the moonlight, it smiles at him.
