After Our Pet's Genes Mutated, The Whole Family Went Crazy

In the near-future biopunk city of New Green, rebellious high schooler Zhang Xiaoqiang brings home a “glowing pet cat” called Coal Ball from the black market, claiming it’s an ordinary cute pet. When Coal Ball sprouts glowing tentacles and spits out strange orbs of light in the middle of the night, the lives of his conservative technician father, warmhearted mother, and germophobic little sister are turned upside down. The mutant creature, actually an alien “gene seeder,” sparks one hilarious family defense campaign after another, from using square dancing as cover to inventing the ultimate disguise gadget. It also drags the whole family into a conspiracy involving an official investigation and a mysterious laboratory. As Coal Ball’s powers continue to awaken, the Zhang family discovers that their bond with this “visitor from outer space” is far deeper than they could have imagined. This is a heartwarming sci-fi comedy about an unexpected collision between an ordinary family and an interstellar destiny, exploring what makes a family and what makes a life amid gene editing, ethical dilemmas, and dark humor.
