Also includes bonus chapters about Jiang Wumian's life alone after Song Yu's death.
Jiang Wumian's life was always caught in the flames, but Song Yu was the only light in that fire, a light she reached for twice and still couldn't hold on to.
Their childhood encounter made Song Yu love Jiang Wumian for fifteen whole years. In high school, she was the transfer student, and he was the aloof, top-student school tyrant. She was also the only person he had ever fallen for.
Rain fell beside the inkstone in a classroom during the plum-rain season. Song Yu stood outside the window, holding an umbrella. Jiang Wumian looked at the exchange-student notice in his hand and said softly, “Your future matters more than I do.”
Years later, amid the blazing flames of a hotpot restaurant, he ran toward her in his firefighter's uniform, just like the childhood rescue in which they had rushed toward each other.
She was already engaged to someone who could offer her a stable life, yet the instant she saw him, she heard her heartbeat fall out of rhythm.
The future stretched on so far, but the promise made in the rain beside the inkstone was as brief as a dream.
Jiang Wumian's eyes reddened in the flames. Some feelings, she realized, could still break through your defenses, even after all those years and despite an engagement.
