Hidden within the steel-and-concrete urban jungle is a group of unusual “residents”: a sentient grass that laughs so hard at bad jokes its flowerpot cracks, a short-tempered bus that loves listening to comedy routines, a signal tower that can send text messages, and even traffic lights eager to try “free switching” mode.
Lu Fei is an utterly ordinary copywriter at an advertising agency. His greatest talent is collecting bad jokes. Then one day, a gag makes the flowerpot of a sentient grass plant crack with laughter, and he discovers that he has awakened a “Joyful Spirit Root,” a gift seen only once in a century that lets him increase his spiritual energy by making all things laugh.
By a twist of fate, he joins the Bureau of Special Affairs and embarks on an absurd yet thrilling path of cultivation:
To build up his spiritual energy, he sets up a “bad joke stall” beneath an overpass and tells gags to security cameras to get them working again;
He leads the “Emotion Regulation Squad” into battle, using square-dance hits to subdue revolving doors that keep catching suit trousers, and chillingly bad jokes to “physically cool down” furious oil tanks;
Even his neighbor is a stand-up-comedy-performing robot vacuum, while his adjutant is a “translator” who can understand the languages of all things.
From an unknown nobody who could make one pot of grass laugh to a national commander leading a force of superpowered troops, Lu Fei proves with every gag that laughter is never weakness. It is the gentlest and most powerful force of all. After all, he is the only person in the whole world who can resolve crises with bad jokes and make all things submit.
This is an underdog story about “comedy,” and a marvelous adventure about protecting the city with laughter. When short-tempered intelligent beings meet a cultivator who loves telling jokes, even the steel jungle can bloom with humor.
