She is Su Qingyuan, 22, the daughter of one of Shanghai's wealthiest capitalists. Her father controlled a huge share of the silk, foreign trade, and finance industries dating back to the Republic of China, and her family was immensely rich. Raised in luxury, she speaks four languages and has mastered a range of skills. A pampered young lady, she lived high above the mundane world, untouched by hardship. Then her family collapsed overnight and both her parents died. Tainted by her class background, she was sent down to impoverished Longshan in the northwest, falling hard from the clouds into the mire. Battered and humiliated, she only wanted a place to shelter from the wind and rain.
He is Lin Hu, 26, a rough-hewn man born and raised in Longshan. His parents died protecting their village when he was seven, and he has lived with his grandmother ever since. He can barely read and has never set foot beyond Longshan. Unworldly, with nothing but seemingly endless brute strength, he speaks loudly and bluntly, without a trace of tenderness or tact. A true country bumpkin, he scrapes by hunting, farming, and woodworking to keep their dilapidated home standing.
A twist of fate binds these two people, worlds apart, together with a marriage contract.
At the start of the story, he frowns and declares in a rough, cold voice, “I married to sleep with my wife and have children. If you're willing, stay. If not, get out as soon as you can. Don't get in the way of my life.”
By the end, he holds her hand. All the coldness and roughness have faded from his eyes, leaving only tenderness and a love he can no longer hide. In the plainest words, he promises her a lifetime together: “I don't ask for much. I just want you safe and sound. I'll stay by your side, take care of our home, and never leave you for the rest of our lives.”
