After the September 18 Incident in 1931, Jiang He, a young man from Pokou Village on the banks of the canal, obeys his father's wishes and goes to Baoding's Yuxiang Pickle Garden to learn the art of making pickles. His steady, sincere nature wins over Yushan, the eccentric master craftsman, who teaches him the garden's secret techniques. Together with Sun Lanzhi, the owner's daughter who has returned from studying in Japan, Jiang He modernizes production and helps keep the business running, holding fast to the belief that industry can save the nation while secretly aiding the resistance against Japan.
Jiang He's eldest brother, Jiang Jia, makes a name for himself while escorting merchants south. He takes charge of a canal fleet and earns a reputation for honor and trustworthiness, risking his life to protect merchants' interests. Later, using his position as president of the Sino-Japanese Friendship Association as a cover, he leads the fleet in establishing a north-south supply route for the resistance. Their youngest brother, Jiang Li, witnesses the Japanese army's atrocities and joins the resistance. He grows from a hot-blooded young man into a military intelligence agent, carrying out missions to eliminate traitors while staying true to his country and his heart.
The Japanese army covets Yuxiang Garden's secret recipe and sends agents to infiltrate it in disguise, enlisting apprentice Gu Jiusheng to aid them from within. Meanwhile, rival forces in Baoding stir beneath the surface. Xue Mingli, raised in a military family, awakens to the cause of revolution and becomes a leader of the Communist underground, uniting resistance forces from all walks of life.
After Baoding falls, Jiang He and Sun Lanzhi struggle to keep the pickle garden operating and protect its secret methods, turning Yuxiang Garden into a covert transit station supporting the resistance. Though the three brothers belong to different factions, their devotion to the nation brings them together on a hidden front, where they fight the Japanese in concert. At the decisive battle of Dawa, they join forces to thwart the Japanese army's encirclement campaign.
After victory in the War of Resistance, Jiang He and Sun Lanzhi carry on the pickle garden's legacy. Xue Mingli and Jiang Jia join the War of Liberation, while Jiang Li is forced to go to Taiwan. Over more than a decade, the people of the canal region stay true to their ideals through perseverance and sacrifice, composing a tragic song of country and family that brings together the spirit of craftsmanship, revolutionary faith, and national integrity.
