Chaotic Evolution: Deep Blue Terror

When genes become a menu, your last meal decides your fate.

Three days of torrential rain, and the world fell utterly silent.

It wasn't that there was no sound. Trees were chewing, moss was breathing, and the streets were slowly digesting the ruins of yesterday's civilization. It was the sounds of humanity that had vanished.

If you were lucky (or unlucky) enough to eat meat before the final night of rain, congratulations. You might survive this “protein war” as a predator.

If you ate only vegetables... I'm sorry.

As for me? I'm Chen Shen, an unemployed young man who couldn't even afford discounted steak while shopping at the supermarket.

When everyone rushed for the meat counter, I picked up the last box of frozen octopus tentacles.

They laughed at me. “You're still trying to save money at a time like this? What's more important, your life or money?”

Now they look at me differently. They see me vanish perfectly against a wall, pick three locks at once with my tentacle-like fingers, and see more clearly underwater than on land.

Wang Pangzi was right: the things in this rain are deadly.

But he didn't tell the whole story: they're deadly to the old humans.

And the ticket into the new world is hidden in the last bite of protein you swallowed before disaster struck.

My fate is to become an octopus.

Now I'll use the ways of this eight-armed creature to survive in this sunken city.

Then I'll swim two thousand kilometers back to my old home in Northeast China.

My mom is still waiting for me there.
