Don't Call Me an Evil Spirit, I'm the Village Guardian

They laugh at me for being mad, while I laugh at them for failing to see the truth.

Chen Sangeng transmigrates and becomes the village guardian of Hetou Village, a profession devoted to acting like a fool.

Everyone in the village thinks he is an idiot, and so do the “strange folk” who pass through. So the Thread-Tying Man teaches him three threads, the Incense-Burning Man gives him a packet of incense, the Exorcist passes on a flick of his finger, and the Paper-Cutting Man slips him a cloth doll...

They figure that village guardians are all idiots anyway. He won’t learn a thing, and there’s no risk of him giving their secrets away.

Until the day people start dying in the village.

A corpse in a wedding dress rises from the well. Paper-cut brides hang from the locust tree. At midnight, suona horns ring throughout the village

“Nine brides’ blood, to open a door.”

Chen Sangeng squats on the doorstep, drinking his porridge as a red coffin is carried past.

He scratches his head and pulls those “idiot’s gifts” from his clothes.

“Time to get to work.”

After that, people in the business start calling him a wicked spirit again.

Chen Sangeng: “This is a wrongful accusation! I’m not a wicked spirit, I’m just a village guardian...”
