Small-Town Girl Goes to the City to Hustle for Cash, Slap Faces, and Cut Ties with Her Family

The day Zhou Xiaoman ran away from her small town, the family courtyard was packed with people, as if they were picking items off a menu. The matchmaker recited the man’s conditions one by one: how much the bride price would be, whose name would go on the house, who would pay for the banquet. Then came the final line: it would all go toward buying a house and finding a wife for her younger brother. She sat there like a piece of merchandise waiting to be rung up. Her relatives crowded around her, smiling and saying, “It’s for your own good,” while their eyes did the math: If you don’t marry, what will happen to your brother? If you don’t hand over the money, how will this family get by? Her little bit of affection, her little bit of dignity, couldn’t even squeeze onto the corner of the table.

When the people who call themselves family are ready to take your life, their hands can be crueler than any stranger’s. She waited until everyone had let their guard down, then grabbed her bag and left. The first breath she took in the city nearly choked her: the damp stench of the urban village seemed to seep into her bones, three people were crammed into a single room in a shared flat, looking for work felt like stepping into a den of wolves, agents demanded deposits upfront, and bosses docked her pay on a whim. The scumbag who promised to face the world by her side shoved her out in a crisis; the “bestie” who called her a sister turned around and used her as a bargaining chip; and the rope tying her to her hometown still threatened to strangle her: forced marriage, demands for money, judgment in the ancestral hall...

But she wasn’t someone to be pushed around. Every time she was cheated, she learned a way forward; every time someone stepped on her, she remembered the soles of their shoes. She started out at the clothing wholesale market, hauling goods, checking sizes, and snatching up hit styles. By day, she competed with other stallholders in volume and speed; at night, she went over the accounts and learned to read people in the warehouse. Little by little, she built up her own warehouse, her own vehicle, and her own distribution network, turning “doing business” into a path of her own.

The world never gives anyone a free ride to shore. The first half of her life pressed the breath from her lungs; only in the second half did she slowly turn the tables and savor her success. It wasn’t luck falling from the sky. Step by step, she dragged herself out of the mud.
