After My Startup Failed, I Learned My Dad Was the Richest Man in the World

Zhang Mo always thought his life was a straight line, pushed forward by hard work.

With an undergraduate degree from Tsinghua University and a postdoctoral fellowship at Princeton, he had made his way up the social ladder in the most conventional and respectable fashion. When he returned to China to start a business, he was hailed as the model tech entrepreneur returning from overseas. Standing at the crossroads of capital, policy, and public opinion, he had a clear future and a plan that made perfect sense.

But failure came quietly and with unnerving precision.

The project never blew up, and the company never went under, but every crucial moment went just slightly wrong. The funding was reasonable but late. Promised resources never materialized. Every decision followed the rules, yet none of them led to results. Zhang Mo thought it was a lack of experience. Only when his project was sidelined and he was assigned a worthless plot of land that nobody wanted did he realize the truth: he had not simply failed. The System had deliberately abandoned him.

The truth was soon forced into the open.

His father was no ordinary businessman, but a capital magnate who had kept a low profile for years. And Zhang Mo’s entrepreneurial journey had not been a purely personal choice. He was not the target of an attack, but a variable being used. His failure had been folded into a much larger scheme, serving to conceal the transfer of capital, reshape the industry, and even rebalance the distribution of power.

More cruelly, his father was caught up in it too.

This failure was a trial for Zhang Mo, and a deliberate blow to his father’s authority. Nobody stepped in to save him, and nobody offered an explanation. All Zhang Mo was left with was one question: when hard work no longer determines the outcome, can you still find a new way to judge the world?

On the margins, underestimated, ignored, and cast aside, Zhang Mo began his first real postmortem of failure
