I’m Kaneki Ken, formerly a clerk at the Civil Affairs Bureau and now an intern bailiff in the Underworld.
On my first day at work, I discovered:
1. The congestion at the Bridge of Helplessness rivals the subway during morning rush hour.
2. Meng Po’s Soup has had only one flavor for a thousand years, and the reviews are brutal.
3. The Book of Life and Death is still being run on Excel, and it hasn’t even been backed up!
As a former outstanding civil servant, my compulsive need for order kicked in on the spot.
Three months later, the Underworld had been completely transformed:
· Smart queue management cut the wait for reincarnation by 70%.
· Meng Po’s Soup now comes in the flavors of eight major cuisines, and has five-star reviews.
· The Underworld Connect app is live, letting people check their reincarnation status with one tap.
The King of Hell patted my shoulder. “Good work, little Jin. Keep it up and I’ll make you permanent by the end of the year.”
I smiled and nodded, then quietly opened the internal whistleblower module I’d secretly designed.
The first name on the screen was the Director of the Reincarnation Bureau.
After all, streamlining procedures is only the first step.
Rooting out corruption is my real specialty.
