New Perspectives on the History of the Three Kingdoms

Mr. Liang Mancang is an expert on the Three Kingdoms, Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern dynasties. He has spent many years researching the history of the Three Kingdoms and has broad influence among both scholars and general readers. This book brings together fifteen of his articles on Three Kingdoms history, focusing mainly on historical figures. Written in an accessible style, it uses stories about people from the past to explore historical events. Moving beyond the stereotyped, formulaic portrayals of Three Kingdoms figures found in earlier works, it reveals their varied personalities and traits in different historical circumstances. The figures discussed include Cao Cao, Xun Yu, Lü Bu, Dong Zhuo, Guan Yu, Emperor Ming of Wei, Zhuge Liang, Pang Tong, Sun Quan, Zhu Ran, and Sima Zhao. Drawing on historical sources, the book asks why Guan Yu, though a mere warrior, formed such a close connection with the Spring and Autumn Annals, and what motivated him to read it; whether Lü Bu's killings of Dong Zhuo and Ding Yuan were the result of his fickle nature or of complex social and political factors; why Cao Cao can be called “a peerless hero of his age,” while Sima Zhao can only be called an ambitious schemer; and how a close study of the Zhu family reveals the relationship between Sun Wu's imperial power and the powerful families of Jiangnan. Overall, the book takes an approach that is both academically cutting-edge and suited to popular reading, making it a good choice for researchers and readers interested in history and literature.
