A Red Letter Sent Amid the Flames of War

At one last glance from the Shanghai docks, banker Gu Qingyuan wrapped an old scarf around his wife Shen Jingyi’s neck, placed his pocket watch in their daughter’s hand, and turned to walk into the fog over the occupied zone.

Trapped on an isolated island, he cut a family portrait into three pieces by the red light of a darkroom, protecting his family’s last shred of dignity amid the ruins of the financial world. She carried a wooden box full of letters westward, recording the shattered land with her paintbrush as she wandered in exile. The Yangtze River separated their two forms of devotion: he navigated conspiracies with the utmost care, while she documented unbroken spirits on the road.

Through eight years of war, the money orders he sent crossed the blockade, while her sketches were hidden in anonymous envelopes. Their daughter grew up to the ticking of the pocket watch, and began using her childish strokes to depict “Papa’s heartbeat” and “Mama’s rivers and mountains.” When news of victory finally arrived, he put his last accounts in order, and she closed the diary she had filled. In their own ways, they had fulfilled their deepest duty to their country and homeland.

This is the story of Gu Qingyuan and Shen Jingyi: financial battles far from the smoke of the battlefield, cultural devotion on the road to exile, and the longest letter home, written over eight years.
