The Netherworld is divided into three realms: Water, Fire, and Ice. Each realm has its own King of the Underworld. The story takes place in the territory of Chiyao, King of the Underworld's Fire Prison.
Chiyao rules the Netherworld's Fire Prison and specializes in refining pills such as the Ten Thousand Miasmas Returning to Origin Pill, which cures miasma and saves lives, and the Clear Miasma, Prolong Life Pill. If the immortals of the Heavenly Court want to buy high-grade pills from him, they must bid at auction with a combination of hard currency and rare celestial treasures, such as divine artifact fragments or celestial registration records.
One day, a thousand-year-old Dark-Scaled Serpent snuck into the Netherworld's Fire Prison. While King Chiyao was presiding over an auction at the Netherworld Auction Hall, it tried to steal the Fire Prison's Flameheart Crystal. By accident, it knocked over the Netherworld Miasma-Suppressing Cauldron, and the miasma inside spilled out into the mortal world.
When Chiyao learned what had happened, he went to the mortal world himself to capture the thousand-year-old Dark-Scaled Serpent. Along the way, he accidentally saved a wolf named Hupo, who had swallowed the serpent's core and gallbladder. To save Hupo, Chiyao fed him one of his own avatars as a healing remedy, binding the two of them in a master-servant contract.
While still a wolf, Hupo also met Bai Lie, a pure-white crow. The wolf and bird were inseparable and became a great team.
From then on, Hupo and Bai Lie became official Netherworld messengers in Chiyao's service. Taking human form, the pair head to the mortal world to slay monsters, exorcise demons, and catch ghosts, encountering all sorts of exciting and amusing adventures.
