Qing Dynasty, Zhang Chunfan, one of the four great banned books of the late Qing
The novel centers on Zhang Qiugu, also known as Zhang Ying, a cultured man from Changshu, Jiangsu. Discontented with family life, he leaves home and wanders through the pleasure quarters of Shanghai, Suzhou, and other places. Through Zhang Qiugu’s visits to brothels, the story portrays all kinds of urban characters, including prostitutes, officials, merchants, and hangers-on, exposing the many evils of late Qing society, such as brothel scams, collusion between officials and merchants, and moral decay.
This book is very interesting to read carefully, but it requires some patience. It feels quite refreshing, but I still can't get used to the semi-vernacular words. What can I say? The plot is exciting and interesting.
It's pretty good. I like it. It's not bad. The plot is very interesting.
