The arrival of extraterrestrial life left humanity helpless. Most people transferred their consciousness into spiritual bodies and entered a virtual world in hopes of attaining immortality, while only about one percent of humanity eked out an existence in artificial ecosystems. Human civilization seemed to have reached its end. Using various techniques to study the alien life forms, biologist Dr. Chen discovered that their bodies were completely unlike those of Earth's organisms and possessed extraordinary vitality. Conventional physical and chemical methods were almost entirely ineffective against them.
To make matters worse, humanity lost control of the super quantum computer's operating system, forfeiting its most powerful weapon.
To find the aliens' weakness, Dr. Chen, Assistant J, and computer expert Engineer Q chose to become spiritual bodies and enter the virtual world. Their goal was to regain control of the operating system and secure humanity's victory.
The virtual world is managed entirely by a superintelligence. Spiritual bodies may appear to have no differences in status, but a new set of social rules has emerged, and spiritual bodies and humans have become two separate species.
After becoming a spiritual body, Dr. Chen gradually understood and adapted to the laws of spiritual-body society. But by chance, he discovered that the virtual world was actually a sociological experiment, with every spiritual body serving as a lab rat.
