Chang Nan, a modern law student, finds herself transported into the Great Zhou dynasty, where she becomes the daughter of a disgraced minister whose family was confiscated and who was exiled after a failed reform. She is then forced to become the live-in son-in-law of Li Che, a poor scholar, in the hope of bringing him good luck. From the start, she faces hostility all around: bandits attempt to ambush them during the journey into exile, and she is lowborn, isolated, and without support. Just then, the Strongest Legalist System activates and issues an impossible mission: help Li Che pass the provincial imperial exam within three months, or the System will erase her. At stake is more than fate: Li Che is the orphaned son of a late reformist leader, and his success or failure will determine whether the flame of reform survives.
